Laser Hair Removal — How It Works

What laser does Pay & Go Laser MD Spa use?+

We use the Candela GentleMax Pro — the gold standard in medical-grade laser hair removal. It combines a 755 nm Alexandrite laser (ideal for lighter skin) and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser (safe for darker and tanned skin). Both wavelengths are FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction.

How does laser hair removal work?+

The laser emits concentrated light absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in each hair follicle. The heat destroys the follicle's ability to produce new hair without damaging the surrounding skin. Over multiple sessions, follicles are permanently disabled, and hair growth is significantly reduced.

How many sessions do I need to see results?+

Most clients see 70–90% reduction after 6–8 sessions. Hair grows in cycles — the laser only targets follicles in the active (anagen) growth phase, which is about 20–30% of follicles at any time. Sessions are spaced 4–8 weeks apart to catch each cycle. Some areas (like the face or hormonal zones) may require maintenance sessions.

How long do the results last?+

Laser hair removal produces permanent hair reduction. The destroyed follicles never regenerate. However, hormonal changes (pregnancy, PCOS, menopause) can stimulate dormant follicles over time. Most clients need only 1–2 touch-up sessions per year after completing their initial package.

Does laser hair removal hurt?+

The GentleMax Pro includes a patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) that sprays a burst of cryogen onto the skin just before each laser pulse — most clients describe it as a rubber band snap followed by immediate cooling. Pain is minimal compared to waxing. Sensitive areas like bikini or underarms feel more intense, but sessions are fast.

How long does a laser hair removal session take?+

Treatment time depends on the area: upper lip (5 minutes), underarms (10 minutes), Brazilian (20–30 minutes), full legs (45–60 minutes), full body (90–120 minutes). We never rush sessions — each pulse is precisely applied for maximum results.

Skin Types & Safety

Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?+

Yes. The Candela GentleMax Pro's 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser bypasses the melanin in the skin surface and targets the deeper follicle, making it safe and effective for all skin tones including Fitzpatrick types IV–VI. We treat clients of all ethnicities including Hispanic, Black, Indian, and Middle Eastern skin tones every day.

Can I get laser treatment if I'm tanned?+

Active tans (sun or spray tan) increase the risk of burns and pigmentation changes. We recommend avoiding sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before and after treatment, and always applying SPF 30+ to treated areas. We assess each client's skin tone at consultation and adjust laser settings accordingly for maximum safety.

What skin tones can be treated at your spa?+

All skin tones from Fitzpatrick I (very fair) to Fitzpatrick VI (very dark). The GentleMax Pro is specifically designed to handle the full spectrum. We customize the wavelength, fluence, and pulse duration for each client during a free consultation.

Are there any conditions that make laser unsafe?+

We do not treat active skin infections, open wounds, or areas with keloid-prone scarring without medical clearance. Pregnant clients should postpone laser treatments. Clients on certain medications (isotretinoin/Accutane, photosensitizing antibiotics) must wait before treatment. We review your medical history at the free consultation.

Does laser hair removal cause cancer?+

No. Laser hair removal uses non-ionizing light (unlike X-rays or UV radiation). The laser light does not penetrate beyond the dermis and has no documented link to cancer. The FDA has cleared laser hair removal devices as safe when used properly by trained professionals.

Before & After Your Session

What should I do before my laser hair removal appointment?+

Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment (not wax or pluck — the follicle must be intact). Arrive with clean, product-free skin. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for 2 weeks prior. Skip retinoids and exfoliants 48 hours before. Stay hydrated. Arrive 10 minutes early for your first visit so we can complete intake paperwork.

What should I NOT do before laser?+

Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams for 4–6 weeks before treatment (these remove the follicle the laser needs to target). Do not tan or use self-tanner. Do not apply numbing creams without our guidance. Do not take blood thinners (like ibuprofen) on the day of treatment.

What happens after a laser session?+

Mild redness and a sunburn-like sensation are normal and typically resolve within 24–48 hours. The treated hair will "shed" (fall out) over 1–3 weeks — this is the destroyed follicle releasing. Avoid heat (saunas, hot tubs, intense exercise) for 24 hours. Apply aloe vera gel and SPF 30+. Do not pick or scratch the area.

How soon will I see hair fall out?+

Treated hairs shed within 1–3 weeks after your session. You may notice hairs "growing" — they are actually dead hairs being pushed out by the follicle. Gentle exfoliation after 2 weeks helps clear them. Do not wax or tweeze between sessions; shaving is fine.

Other Treatments

What is HydraFacial and how is it different from a regular facial?+

HydraFacial is a medical-grade skin resurfacing treatment that simultaneously cleanses, extracts, and hydrates using patented Vortex-Fusion technology. Unlike traditional facials, it uses serums infused directly into the pores. Results are visible immediately — glowing, hydrated skin with no downtime. A single session takes about 30–45 minutes.

What does HydraFacial treat?+

HydraFacial addresses fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, oily and congested skin, hyperpigmentation, and dull complexion. It is suitable for all skin types and tones. Many clients pair monthly HydraFacials with their laser hair removal sessions.

Do you offer Botox?+

Yes. We offer Botox injections for forehead lines, crow's feet, frown lines (11s), brow lift, and lip lines. All injections are administered by trained medical professionals. Results last 3–4 months. Schedule a consultation to discuss units needed and expected results.

What is Venus Legacy body contouring?+

Venus Legacy uses Multi-Polar Radio Frequency and Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields to heat deep tissue, stimulating collagen production and breaking down fat cells. It reduces circumference, tightens loose skin, and diminishes cellulite. Popular for abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and face. Sessions are painless — most clients say it feels like a warm massage.

Do you treat spider veins?+

Yes. We treat facial and leg spider veins (telangiectasias) using laser therapy. The laser targets the hemoglobin in the blood vessel, collapsing it without damaging surrounding skin. Results are visible after 1–3 sessions. This treatment is not suitable for varicose veins (raised veins) — those require a vascular specialist.

Can I combine treatments in one visit?+

Absolutely. Many clients do laser hair removal + HydraFacial or laser + Venus Legacy in the same visit. We schedule combination appointments as one block. Some combinations require sequencing (e.g., laser first, then facial) — we handle all logistics. Ask at your free consultation.
